Over the decades, these two family-owned businesses have watched the neighborhood grow, evolve, and transform, all while passing down their expertise and traditions from one generation to the next. Today, having become well-known institutions among both Montrealers and visitors alike, they continue to showcase the Italian heritage that has shaped the neighborhood.

Their history is, in fact, closely tied to the origins of the Little Italy neighborhood. Starting in the late 19th century, Italian immigrants gradually settled in Montreal, particularly around Saint-Laurent Boulevard, and helped significantly transform the neighborhood, shaping Little Italy as we know it today. It was right in the midst of this period of vibrant growth that, in 1956, two businesses were founded that would become inseparable from the neighborhood.

On Dante Street, Teresa and Luigi Vendittelli, along with their sons, opened Quincallerie Dante. Originally, the store catered primarily to the needs of the many Italian immigrants by offering tools and supplies for building and renovating neighborhood homes. Over the years, the family business has evolved and reinvented itself. A new generation has taken the reins, with Elena Faita and her brother Rudy carrying on the business’s expertise and family spirit while developing the specialties for which it is now widely renowned: kitchenware and hunting equipment.

That same year, just a few steps away, another family story began to unfold.
